Nejc Kodrič opened Bitstamp in 2011. It started in Slovenia and later became a Luxembourg company, with a second office in Ljubljana. It is one of the few fiat exchanges from that first wave that is still a going concern. Dollars, euros, and pounds in, bitcoin out.
