Stephen Pair and Tony Gallippi opened BitPay in Atlanta in 2011, when a shop that wanted bitcoin had almost nowhere to send it. BitPay gave the shop a checkout and settled to the merchant, often in dollars. It later added cards. The settlement coin for most of its life was bitcoin.
